Bank pre-authorization: what it is and how it works

A bank pre-authorization reserves an amount on a customer card without charging it immediately.

What is a pre-authorization?

The issuing bank checks the card and reserves available payment capacity. No final payment is collected at validation.

The merchant can later release the authorization or capture part or all of the amount when the agreed conditions are met.

How is it used for a deposit?

The merchant creates a request and sends a secure link. The customer enters card details on a hosted payment page, then the authorization becomes active.

At the end of the rental, the merchant releases the hold or captures the justified amount.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pre-authorization a charge?

No. It is a temporary hold. A charge only happens when the merchant captures the authorization.
